In 2000 Paul picked up his little family and moved to the beautiful town of Mildura, where he started his first painting business called ‘Paul Mahoney’s Painting’ which later turned into ‘Mahoney Painting Services’. He built professional relationships and quickly picked up contracts with building companies which lead to him having a team of 14 local painters and an apprentice.

Apprentices have always been an important part of the business to ensure integrity in the future of the painting and decorating trade. Paul believes sending apprentices to trade school gives them the knowledge and skills that can’t always be learned or taught on the job.

Spiro started his school-based apprenticeship in 2015 and was working full-time for Paul by 2017 while attending trade school at Bendigo Kangan Institute where he was awarded Apprentice of the Year. After Cyclone Debbie hit in QLD (2017) the boys found themselves being a part of a 6 month rebuild doing water damage repair painting. This was an eye opener for the boys and an opportunity for Spiro to take on more responsibility.

As the years have gone by, the business has become smaller with a focus on quality over quantity. Which lead to the formal partnership and announcement of Mahoney & Fililava Painting.
